Abstract: The flow in natural watercourses over the erodible riverbed can cause the appearance of scour holes next to structures built in the river, most commonly next to bridge elements. Since scouring next to the bridge piers and abutments can significantly alter the design loading, and consequently present a risk to bridge safety, it is important to carry out the periodical monitoring and record changes of the riverbed. This paper presents an overview of the instrumentation used to monitor scour processes with discussion of advantages and disadvantages for every instrument type, as well as their applicability for deployment during the flood waves.
